Tucked in the verdant forestlands of Antique province on Panay Island, Malumpati Health Spring is a serene natural attraction known for its incredibly clear blue waters, rejuvenating ambiance, and eco-friendly surroundings. Often referred to as the “blue lagoon” of Panay, this freshwater spring is a haven for those seeking wellness, quiet immersion in nature, and a refreshing escape from the heat. Unlike the crowded beaches of nearby Boracay, Malumpati offers a tranquil, inland alternative — making it a hidden gem for eco-tourists and adventurers alike.

        Location and Accessibility

Malumpati Health Spring is located in Barangay Guia, Pandan, Antique on Panay Island — just a few hours' journey from Caticlan, the jump-off point to Boracay. Its coordinates are 11.767542° N, 122.076657° E.

        To get there:

        • From Boracay: Return to Caticlan Jetty Port and take a tricycle or van to Pandan, Antique (around 1.5 to 2 hours).
        • From Kalibo: Travel by bus or van to Pandan via the National Highway (approximately 2 hours).
        • Upon reaching Pandan town proper, hire a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) or tricycle to reach the spring (about 15–20 minutes on a scenic uphill road).

Access to the spring requires a short walk from the entrance gate through a forested area, which adds to its secluded charm.

        Natural Features

Malumpati Health Spring is part of the Bugang River System, considered one of the cleanest inland water systems in the Philippines. The spring itself forms a deep, natural turquoise-blue pool that flows into a gently meandering river.

Surrounded by thick rainforest vegetation, the site remains cool and shaded throughout the day. The water is remarkably clean, cool, and believed by locals to have therapeutic properties — hence the name “health spring.” The geology of the area consists of limestone formations, which filter the water naturally and enhance its clarity and mineral content.

        Activities and Experiences

Visitors to Malumpati can enjoy a range of nature-based and recreational activities, such as:

        • Swimming in the clear, cold spring water.
        • Tubing down the Bugang River on rubber tubes.
        • Riverside picnicking in shaded huts and cottages.
        • Nature walks along the riverbank trails.
        • Wildlife spotting, especially local birds and butterflies.

Guided eco-tours are also available for those interested in exploring further upriver and learning about the spring’s ecological significance.

        Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Malumpati Health Spring is during the dry season (December to May), when the river and spring remain clear and safe for swimming and tubing. Mornings are ideal for quieter visits and less-crowded facilities, especially on weekends or during holidays.

During the rainy season (June to November), the water may become murkier, and river tubing may be suspended for safety reasons.

        Facilities and Nearby Amenities

The spring area offers basic but sufficient amenities, including:

        • Changing rooms and restrooms.
        • Picnic huts and nipa cottages for rent.
        • Food stalls selling snacks and drinks.
        • Secure parking areas near the entrance.

For overnight stays, visitors can find several budget inns and guesthouses in Pandan town, or return to Caticlan or Kalibo for more upscale accommodations.

        Visitor Tips and Guidelines
        • Bring water shoes or sandals for walking on the rocky riverbed.
        • Use eco-friendly sunblock and insect repellent to protect the spring’s ecosystem.
        • Follow the “leave no trace” principle to avoid littering.
        • Note that river tubing is seasonal and may depend on water levels and weather.
        • Life vests are required for tubing and are provided by local guides.
        • A minimal entrance fee is charged at the gate, with additional fees for cottage rentals or guided activities.

Malumpati Health Spring is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of tourist-heavy destinations like Boracay. With its pristine waters, lush surroundings, and emphasis on natural wellness, it offers a soul-soothing retreat just a few hours away from the beach crowds. Whether you’re up for a cool dip, a lazy float down the river, or simply a day of nature-filled relaxation, Malumpati is a must-visit stop in your Panay Island adventure. Let it be your peaceful escape into the wild heart of the Philippines.
