The Lusong Gunboat in Coron, Palawan is a captivating underwater site where history and marine life meet. Located just off Lusong Island, this sunken Japanese warship from World War II is among the most accessible shipwrecks in the region. Now covered in coral and home to a variety of tropical fish, the gunboat offers an ideal experience for both snorkelers and divers seeking a combination of adventure and historical exploration.

        Historical and Cultural Relevance

The Lusong Gunboat was one of several Japanese vessels sunk during an American air raid on September 24, 1944, in Coron Bay. These ships, seeking refuge from bombings in Manila, were discovered and targeted by U.S. forces. Though smaller than other wrecks in the area, the Lusong Gunboat holds historical value as a remnant of the Pacific theater of WWII. Its transformation into an artificial reef also symbolizes nature’s ability to reclaim and restore.

        Features and Highlights

The wreck lies at a shallow depth of about 5 to 10 meters, making it perfect for snorkelers and beginner divers. The boat now supports a thriving reef system, with a variety of hard and soft corals growing across its structure. Schools of colorful fish, including angelfish, parrotfish, clownfish, and lionfish, inhabit the wreck, making it a hotspot for underwater photography. Despite its age, the gunboat’s silhouette and some structural features remain visible, offering a dramatic underwater scene enhanced by sunlight filtering through the water.

        Visitor Experience

Snorkelers can enjoy the wreck from the surface thanks to its shallow position and high visibility. The site is often included in island-hopping tours and is usually combined with a visit to the nearby Lusong Coral Garden. Scuba divers can explore the wreck up close, and dive shops in Coron offer packages that include this site, often as part of a multi-wreck itinerary. Underwater photographers also favor this location for its lighting and the blend of metal and marine life.

        Location and Access

Lusong Gunboat is located off Lusong Island in Coron, Palawan, Philippines.
To get there, travelers typically fly into Francisco B. Reyes Airport (Busuanga), followed by a 30–45 minute van ride to Coron Town. From there, it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours by boat. Most visitors reach the site as part of a guided tour or private boat trip arranged in Coron Town.

        Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to May, when the waters are calm and visibility is excellent. Morning hours are ideal for snorkeling and photography, offering better lighting and fewer waves.

        Practical Information

There is no fixed entrance fee for Lusong Gunboat; access is typically included in island-hopping or snorkeling tour packages, which range from ₱1,200 to ₱1,800. Gear such as snorkels, fins, and life vests can be rented or are provided by the tour operator. Dive centers also offer guided wreck dives suitable for both beginner and advanced divers.

        Visitor Tips
        • Bring a waterproof camera for capturing the vibrant underwater scenes.
        • Use reef-safe sunscreen to help preserve the marine environment.
        • Avoid stepping on or touching the corals to protect both yourself and the reef.
        • Listen carefully to guides for safety instructions, especially when diving.
        • Combine your visit with the Lusong Coral Garden for a richer marine experience.
